Take Deep Creek Rd to Deep Creek spillway & park. NOTE: can no longer enter this area. Instead, park off of HWY 173 at the enterance to the dam (Adventure Pass Req'd).
hiking route:
OLD WAY: Hike up asphalt, over a pile of rocks, make a left when you get down on other side and go to PCT trailhead. NEW WAY: walk across top of dam to PCT trailhead down off the other end of the dam, just pass the large concrete spillway.
details:
Just a short hike on PCT one day. I think I actually started it at Hwy 173 though, because I know that I crossed Deep Creek at the beaver dam and I took some new rubber boots with me to try them out and they were jabbing me in the back the whole time. So, I'm pretty sure I started at Hwy 173 which adds maybe 1.5 miles onto the hike each way, maybe a little less. Nothing much very interesting to say.
THE HIKE: PCT above Deep Creek -- East of the Mojave River Dam, outside Hesperia on May 2, 1997
This pic shows Deep Creek Canyon and the Mojave River Dam, outside of Hesperia. The trail on the left is a small trail that seems to start nowhere and go nowhere called Deep Creek Trail. This pic was taken from PCT.
This pic basically shows the same as above except for the dam. Deep Creek Trail and Deep Creek canyon. This pic was taken from PCT.
A pic of Mojave River dam and spillway and a corner of Hesperia, and the San Gabriel Mts in far background.
Here's a nice shot of Deep Creek Canyon with the waters of Deep Creek showing.
This pic shows PCT as it winds its boring way above Deep Creek Canyon, still near the Mojave River Dam.
One of the many pools along Deep Creek, maybe 1-1.5 miles from the Mojave River Dam.
Just to the left of this pic on Deep Creek is the "Jump or Die, 8-Ball" cliff jumping area. When my buddy Jerry was jumping I calculated the height to be about 40ft. Once we saw a beaver down there (the animal kind) and since then I've seen quite a few more beavers in Deep Creek.
These holes in the ground are at various places along the side of the PCT. I don't know what their purpose was but because of Willow Fire erosion, this one has been almost completely filled in.
