DesertMud - Hiking, Mountain Biking, Pine Trees, Southern California
Blue Ridge to Pine Mountain Update

the hike:
Blue Ridge to Pine Mountain
date: 8/05/2000
location: Angeles & San Bernardino NF (Sheep Mountain Wilderness), Southern California, USA
type: Out & Back
distance: ~7 Mi RT
time up: 105 min
time back down: 60 min
start elev: 8300 ft (Guffy)
Pine Mtn: 9648 ft
elev gain/loss: 1350 ft
difficulty: ***.5
scenic: ****
technical: *.5
driving directions: From I-15, Take Hwy 138 to Hwy 2 go past the town of Wrightwood a little ways to Blue Ridge Rd on your left (on the right is a large PCT parking area), take Blue Ridge Rd 6 miles to Guffy Campground and park there. If the gate is open you can continue on past Guffy another 2 miles or so to the Pine Mtn. Trailhead near the end of the road.
hiking route: Hike PCT at the far end of the campground down a hill to the road and take the road to the Pine Mtn Trailhead. Or take PCT there, whatever you want.
details: We planned to hike up Pine Mountain, to Dawson Peak to Mt. Baldy, but we got started about 3pm and Jerry had to be back to Phelan before dark so we only went to Pine Mountain. The trail is cool because there are no large switchbacks and pretty much you hike straight up the mountain, of course this make it a little steeper. So we get up there and you can see all the smoke from the darn Sequoia fire and this fire out past Cucamonga Peak somewhere, so the view wasn't so hot, but it was still cool. The trail ain't no walking path so tread lightly or wear boots or some BS like that. If you're here 'cause you read the note I left in the can on Pine Mtn then you rock. YEAH!! Then we come back down and there's these campers out there PAST GUFFY, and we're like how'd you guys get out here. Duh, the gate is now open and it wasn't when we showed up & that would have saved us about 4 RT miles and we could have made Baldy with no problem from the dark. So Bummer. But still the level walk from the Guffy to the trailhead is nice. The time back down would have been faster, but we spent too much time gettin' high sniffing Jeffery Pine bark.

There are few corners of California in which Tom Stienstra has not set Vibram-soled foot at one time or another.
In this information-packed guidebook, the longtime San Francisco Chronicle outdoors columnist catalogues the best (and the rest) of the Golden State's trails, combining his encyclopedic knowledge with that of another accomplished trekker, Ann Marie Brown. The two cover more than a thousand hikes that range from short jaunts to multiday expeditions, rating each walk for length and difficulty and providing notes on water sources, points of interest, permits, contacts, and other useful data. At the most demanding end of the scale, for example, is a 14-mile scramble up Mount Shasta, for which they recommend that you carry an ice ax and crampons; on the moderate side is the 10.6-mile ramble through Pine Valley, in the coastal mountains above Big Sur, with "an up-and-down course that soon becomes more down than up"; and on the easy end is a 1.2-mile round-trip amble along the Desert View Nature Trail near the summit of Southern California's Laguna Mountain. In every instance, Stienstra and Brown tell what you can expect to see and where you're likely to encounter trouble in the form of storms, predatory mammals, or crowds.
Thoroughly updated, this is by far the best single source of information on planning a hiking trip in California. --Gregory McNamee (Review © 1996-2001, Amazon.com, Inc)

THE HIKE: Guffy Campground to Pine Mountain in Angeles NF on August 05, 2000
That's me hanging sideways from a cliff on the side of Pine Mountain (A 4ft cliff).
That's a lodgepole pine, me climbing it and Mt Baldy and West Baldy in the background.
Same as above.
Same as above.
This was taken from the top of Pine Mtn at about 5:30 pm or so and is a view of the Angeles National Forest to the southwest I think.
This is a pretty good pic of Mt Baldy (left) and West Baldy (right) taken from the top of Pine Mountain.
