South Fork Lytle Creek Update

the hike:
South Fork Lytle Creek
date: 8/19/2000
location: San Bernardino NF, Southern California, USA
type: Out & Back
distance: ~5 Mi RT
time up: 75 min
time back down: 50 min
start time: 2:45 pm
end time: 5:00 pm
elev gain/loss: ~1200 ft
difficulty: ***
scenic: ***
technical: **
driving directions: From Hesperia, take I-15 past the 215 junction to Sierra Ave exit. Make a right and go towards Lytle Creek. Go a few miles up Lytle Creek Rd, past a 25mph speed limit sign & there are a bunch of large turnouts on both sides of the road, park at one of these.
hiking route: Hike down a trail, across the flowing creek & hike up the dry South Fork Lytle Creek. After a little ways, Bonita Waterfalls will be at the edge of the canyon on your left. Keep hiking up the creek, staying to the right when the creek branches off to the left.
details: The creek is dry and rocky for a little ways, there are some trails in it but they seem to go for a few hundred feet and then end, so the best bet is to just stay in the creek bed the entire hike. Going up, we followed some trails that led out of the creek bed and then pretty much dead-ended in some brush, so stay in the creek bed unless it's impossible to do so. We stayed in the creek almost the whole way out and it was a lot better than hiking along the edge of the creek. When we got into the first shaded section of creek, there was a puddle here and there and up the creek further, there was a small creek flowing which went underground in the exposed areas. The gnats were so thick in the shade that you can practically make a lunch out of them; I mean thick. The only relief was to get out into the sun. There was quite a bit of poison oak and stinging nettle in the shady areas. The rocky creekbed can get kind of jarring after a while. We were initially going up to see the Joe Elliot Sugar Pine, but we made it about half way there & had to get back because we wanted to have a few hours to jam at my house. Where we stopped: the creek comes out of the shade and pretty much makes a left turn way out into the canyon, it's a very obvious change in direction; we went a little ways up (~10min) this canyon & it is easier hiking here because it is more open & less shady, more like the first section of creek. We went maybe 500 ft past this decent sized incense cedar on the left side of the creek and then turned around. The gnats were so thick in some shady spots that it was almost funny - so much that a claustrophobic person would probably have a panic attack for fear of not being able to breathe because of the high gnat:oxygen molecule ratio.
