From I-15, take Hwy 138 West about a mile to Lone Pine Canyon Rd on the left. Make a left here. Go 5 miles up Lone Pine Canyon, just past this ranch on the left and there is a forest rd on the left 3N31. Take this until it meets with a hairpin turn to the right at a junction with 3N33. Take the hairpin turn, now you're on 3N33. Continue up the hill your on and then drop back down the other side to the valley. You will almost be in the North Fork Lytle Creek when you stop at the junction with 3N06 and park. To cut about 3 miles off the hike, make a right at this junction and continue another 1.5 miles or so to the huge white locked gate on Baldy Rd that's so high a convertable with a fold down windshield could drive right under it. Without this additional 1.5 mile trip to the end of the road, total dirt rd driving distance is about 5.5 miles from once you leave Lone Pine Canyon Rd. to where 3N33 and 3N06 cross. |

This one is simple. Hike of Baldy Rd. Go thru the locked gate that you can drive right up to and keep walking along the mellow rd. Hike up a very long switchback and join up at Mt Baldy Notch eventually at about 7800ft elev. When you arrive at the notch, the road to the left goes to Thunder Mtn and trails from Thunder will take you to Telegraph Peak, Timber Mtn, Icehouse Saddle..., the road in the center goes down toward the ski resort and the city of Mt Baldy. The road to the right climbs up the side of Mt Harwood and eventually puts you on the Devils Backbone trail which will take you to Mt Baldy at 10,064 ft. So take the road to the left for Thunder Mtn. It is not a long hike from the Notch to Thunder. At the top of Thunder is the top of a ski lift & really not a whole lot to see. Return the same way. |

This was another failed hike. This was supposed to be a 24 mi loop that visited in this order: Thunder Mtn, Telegraph Peak, Timber Mtn, Mt Harwood, Mt Baldy, West Baldy, Dawson Peak, Pine Mtn. I was going for it & was probably just going to drop Telegraph & Timber but at the Notch Sugar Pines were dropping seed all over and I spent about 2 hours from the Notch to Thunder just collecting seed. Coming back I spent at least another hour collecting more seed between Thunder and the Notch. Yeah I kind of went crazy. So the hike was screwed after blowing 3 hours. I didn't care. I was pleanty happy to have the seed. |
