Here's a list of some of the rides I've taken. My house is located in Hesperia. This list only includes the rides that I remember and is by NO means all of the rides I've taken.

My Quick Fix it Tips
Crown Race, Lower, Removing:
there is not enough gap between fork crown and race to even get a small instrument in, so I took my pocket knife and tapped it in the gap lightly with a hammer. This created a little gap on one side and the I did the other side. Now I have a small gap to work with but race is still stuck good. So then I got another pocket knife and clamped fork in benchtop and pulled up from both sides with both knives and after a while of pulling and prying there was a little more of a gap. Then I really couldn't move it any further so I got two long handled screwdrivers and pryed it up using the preload adjusters as a fulcrum (& the plastic didn't break) & then it finally popped off undamaged.
Crown Race, Lower, Installing:
rather than spend over $50 on the tool, I went to hardware store and bought a 1ft length of 1 1/4" pipe; a fitting - female slip w/ threaded male; a pack of 2 thick 1 1/4" rubber washers. Total cost: $2.35. Put crown race on steerer tube, put a washer on next, fit the female end of fitting onto pipe to add length and decrease inner diameter; slip pipe onto steerer, fitting end down and hammer race on straight by pounding on end of pipe with rubber mallet.
Noise, Creaking From Bottom Bracket Area While Pedaling:
remove chainring nuts and regrease; if that doesn't work, remove bottom bracket, regrease threads and apply loctite 242 to threads and inside the removeable ring & reinstall.
Noise: Squeaky brakes:
they are poorly adjusted; readjust & be sure to toe in slightly
Noisy chain:
lube it & if it still makes noise and is in good shape, put some lube on the cassette.

Rides I'm Planning (let me know if you're interested)
RIDE #1:
Start at my house in Hesperia, walk across Mojave river at Hesperia Lakes, ride Deep Creek Rd (south) to that only main road that goes through the Ord Mts. to near Bowen Ranch. Get on Coxey Truck Trail (3N14) somehow (I've never been able to find it before), ride to Big Pine Flat, continue on Coxey Truck Trail to Rim of the World Drive and into Fawnskin, Ride around Big Bear Lake or something and go back the same way. If I go in the summer I have to leave well before sunrise to avoid the heat while climbing the Ord Mtns, and really all the way to Coxey Road, and a little ways further because that sun on that light dirt is miserable.

RIDE #2:
Take Hwy 38 on the north side of Big Bear Lake to Holcomb Valley Rd, go north and park at the intersection with Poligue Canyon Rd (2N71). Ride 2N71 or 2N96Y to 2N71 to Delmar Mountain Rd (3N12), make left. Make right on Coxey Rd (3N14.2), northwest to Holcomb Creek Rd (3N08), make right, go a ways to Delmar Mountain Rd (3N12), make right all the way back to 3N14, make right to 2N13, make left, maybe take side route to Butler Peak, take Snow Slide Road (2N13) to Green Valley Lake, refill water in Green Valley Lake and take surface streets to Crab Flats Rd (3N16); take it northeast to Big Pine Flat, continue on 3N16 (Big Pine Flat Rd) a ways to 2N09, make right and ride back south on 2N09 to junction with Holcomb Valley Rd and vehicle. This would be one hell of a ride and I will probably cut it way short of what I planned. It's maybe 60 miles or so of forest roads.

cover Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance 3 Ed
Best
Lennard Zinn explains that it doesn't take special skills to learn how to care for one's bike, only "a passion for spreading new grease on old parts." Clearly, his ambition is to share with newcomers the Zen-like joy of bike maintenance. But it's seasoned bike mechanics that should be tripping over each other for a copy of this comprehensive and ambitious manual. Zinn differs from other how-to books by guiding readers--with plain-speaking text--through almost every imaginable repair on almost every imaginable part. He covers everything from rebuilding hubs, to loosening seized stems, to installing six different types of bottom brackets. He even risks cycling blasphemy by walking mere mortals through the art of wheel building--an intimidating task that can take years to perfect. Although best suited for the old pros, his guide is user- friendly, funny, and essential to anyone willing to love their bike. --Ben Tiffany --This text refers to the Paperback edition. The temp was in the 50s most of this ride and it was a beautiful clear day. They were grading the road on the dirt section of Hwy 173 so that was cool. Grass Valley Lake isn't much to see but I took two pictures of it anyway. Cool ride, but no snow and that sucked.

Grass Valley Lake Update
7/26/00 33.6 mi

Total Elv. Gain Approx: +3900ft, Lowest Point to Highest Point: +2000ft.
Butler Peak: 8535ft.
222 Big Pine Flat, Delmar Mtn, Butler Peak Fire Lookout Tower
San Bernardino NF (CA). LOOP & OUT AND BACK. Take Hwy 18 to Hwy 38 to Fawnskin, turn right on Navajo & park behind the Fawn Lodge (very much out of business). Ride out of the Fawn Lodge to Rim of the World Dr (3N14) and take it all the way to Big Pine Flat. At Big Pine Flat (~7miles), make a right onto 3N16, take it to 3N12 (~14miles), make a right. Ride up to the side of Delmar Mtn, pass the Delmar Mtn spring which runs into the road and continue to 3N14, left 1/2mile to 2N68 right, continue on 2N68 to 2N13C, take it to Butler Peak Lookout, or follow lookout tower signs, hike up short trail, return to Fawnskin.
Temp Range: 74-96F; Starting on 3N14, there was a bunch of road construction, but that was cool because they were using huge backhoes. First 1.5 miles is uphill, then there is a few miles downhill, then uphill to Big Pine Flat. 3N16 is uphill for what seems like a long time, on the left (north) side of the road, you can see the Willow Fire Damage and the whole area is closed. Finally there's a nice downhill section. Then when you meet 3N12, it's up again, but the climb seems pretty short along the side of Delmar Mtn. It's fun downhill down the Mtn. Back to 3N14 I went right to this section of road that AAA map labels 2N68, but it's a private road, so I took 2N01X a little ways, but it seemed like it was going way downhill(I later learned that it's just a loop then ends up back at 3N14), so I turned around after about a mile and took 3N14 back to 2N68, which I didn't see it as being labeled. It climbed to 2N13C which climbed a whole lot more and finally I was at Butler Peak and the view is incredible, it made the whole ride worth it, and there are some very beautiful sections of road as you're climbing up. View: Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Silverwood Lake, El Mirage Dry Lake, San Gabriels, High Desert, the 10,000ft ridge and San Gorgonio, Sugarloaf Mtn, Willow Fire Damage. Then I was going to ride back to my truck and drive over to the Mill Creek area and ride to the champion lodgepole pine but I was pretty tired, it was so hot climbing up to Butler Peak. And the tower is awesome the way it is at the top of the rocks up there. I carried my bike up the trail to the tower, there were 3 volunteers there and the sign below says only 4 people are supposed to be up there at a time. This was really too hot of a day to do any of this ride.

6/01/00 82.0

(2 rides, #1=44.7; #2=37.3)
382

(ride #1=218; ride #2=164)
Ride #1: San Bernardino NF (CA). LOOP. My house in Hesperia to Arrowhead Lake Rd to Hwy 173 (make left) to dirt Hwy 173 to paved Hwy 173 to Pilot Rock Rd (2N33) past Pilot Rock to Dart Canyon Rd (2N36) down to near prison to Miller Canyon Rd to Hwy 138 all the way (high speed=41.1mph) to Summit Valley Rd to my house in Hesperia. Ride #2: Loop ride near my house, about 12mi each loop, did 3 times. Temp range: 70-95F. I was going to do just one ride about 70mi but I ran low on water and the nearest supply was a long way downhill, so I cut it short. Ride #1 was awesome, it was the reverse direction of a ride I took on 3/19/00 and this was a much better way to go because you go down on 2N36 rather than up and it's probably about 1500ft elev. in 2 miles. Dirt Hwy 173 was pretty sandy in parts though, Pilot Rock Rd was nice except there were bees all over. Hwy 138: two dead owls, one dead cat, stink bad. Kick a** ride but hot. Set new personal high speed record of 43.0mph. Ride #2: just took it to increase my mileage for the day; mostly paved roads.

Pilot Rock Update
4/23/00 20.0 72 Hesperia (CA). Ride near my house. It's been almost 2 years since I've used clipless pedals, but I decided to try them out again. I couldn't believe how much more power I had; I never realized how much they helped until this ride.
4/19/00 28.0 168 San Bernardino NF (CA). LOOP. Bottom of dirt Hwy 173 to Pilot Rock Rd (2N33) to Silverwood Lake top of dam back on paved 173 to bottom of dirt 173. It snowed in these parts the day before this ride but I saw little snow. It was pretty hot, no wind. Pilot Rock Rd was the coolest I've ever seen it though, lots of little stream crossings, puddle hopping, but all rideable. I didn't walk one step on this entire ride. I took this same ride on 1/8/99 but for some reason it was 2.2 miles longer this time; I did ride across the Silverwood Lake dam but that wouldn't add this much distance on so??

Pilot Rock Update
4/1/00 28.5 145 San Bernardino NF (CA). OUT AND BACK. Bottom of dirt Hwy 173 to Jensen's market in Cedar Glen near Lake Arrowhead. A nice day, a nice breeze, had to search for snow.

Highway 173 to Lake Arrowhead Update
3/19/00 44.1 248 San Bernardino NF (CA). LOOP. My house (Hesperia) to Summit Valley Rd to Hwy 138 to Miller Canyon Rd to Dart Canyon Rd (2N36) to Pilot Rock Rd (2N33) to Hwy 173 to Arrowhead Lake Rd (Hesperia) back to my house. A Nice ride, but it was pretty hot and steep going up 2N36 + I didn't have any food with me and that was not a good idea. For some reason, because I left from my house I planned this ride to be a "walk in the park" because when I left I didn't even know where I was going. It was not an easy ride.

Pilot Rock Update
1/8/99 25.8 167 San Bernardino NF (CA). LOOP. Bottom of dirt Hwy 173 to Pilot Rock Rd (2N33) to Silverwood Lake to paved 173 back to bottom of dirt 173. Temp range: 48-58F with 25-30mph winds. Cold coming down Pilot Rock Rd.

Pilot Rock Update
6/13/98 30.0 126 Hesperia (CA). Some random ride around my house. These are the rides that keep me in shape between actual rides.
6/??/98 32.0 139 Hesperia (CA). Another random ride around my house. If you ride around your block 60 times you get to know your neighbors pretty well. I'm not saying I do this.
6/4/98 ? ? San Bernardino NF (CA). LOOP. Willow Creek Jeep Trail at Hwy 173 (3N34.3) to 2N75 to Squint Ranch Rd (3N34.2) to Hook Creek Rd (2N26Y) to Hwy 173 (paved) back down to where Hwy 173 meets Willow Creek Jeep Trail (3N34.3). This was a really cool ride. The first part on Willow Creek Rd. was pretty burned and hot but once into the forest, it was awesome. At one point, one of the roads turned into a 4-6in deep stream and that was cool. There were these huge signs scattered here and there with forest service maps on them. A heavy fog was rollin' into Lake Arrowhead on my way out, it was awesome.

Willow Creek Update
6/4/98 50.0 269 Various areas within an 8 mile radius of my house. Also the ride listed above this one is part of the 50 miles I rode on this day. First time I rode 50 miles in a day.
5/22/98 26.2 113 San Bernardino NF (CA). LOOP. My house (Hesperia) to Summit Valley Road to Hwy 138 to Hwy 173 to Arrowhead Lake Rd to my house. I was actually using clipless pedals on this ride, usually I ride in waterproof hunting boots and I blow through shallow paved stream crossings, I had wet feet after this one. For some strange reason, I was pretty tired after this ride.
12/27/97 25 ? San Bernardino NF (CA). OUT AND BACK,LOOP. Bottom of dirt Hwy 173 to Grass Valley Rd to Peninsula Dr to W Shore Rd to Voltaire Dr to Geneva Ln to Bern Ln to Lucerne Ln to North Bay Rd to paved Hwy 173 and back down to bottom of dirt 173. There was awesome snow on this ride, played in it for a while, took a pic of my bike next to the sign on the main MTB page and there was ice all over the roads, 2in thick, cars were skidding everywhere, I crashed on ice on dirt 173 coming down, stayed on the small roads. The temperature didn't get much above 30F the whole ride and the starting temp was in the 20s.

Lake Arrowhead, Hwy 173 Update
6/2/97 22.4 151 San Bernardino NF (CA). OUT AND BACK. Bottom of dirt Hwy 173 to Pilot Rock Rd (2N33) to Pilot Rock and back. My first time to Pilot Rock; it was a nice ride; I think I collected some coulter pine seed on this ride. It was hot but I got started about 4:45am.

Pilot Rock Update
5/27/97 ~15 ? San Bernardino NF (CA). LOOP. Start of dirt Cleghorn Rd (2N49) near Silverwood Lake. Take a sharp left at a water tank to 2N45 to 2N59 (easy to miss) back to Cleghorn Rd, make a left back to dirt Cleghorn Rd. Pretty hot. I did a lot of walking on this ride. After you make the sharp left and climb a little more there is this most beautiful section with a pine needle covered road, lots of sugar pine, incense cedar (this section makes the ride well worth it). It's a miserbly rocky descent, chews up tires, brakes. My rear reflector fell off. When I got back this dog someone had dumped made a home in the shade of my vehicle and wouldn't let me near it. Eventually I made friends with it, I couldn't get away from it. I ran it down to the nearby campground 'till it found a trash can and raced back. I felt bad but I already had too many dogs at home.

Sugarpine Mountain Update
5/20/97 20.0 ? San Bernardino NF (CA). Drove to Silverwood Lake, paid $6 and rode around paved trails for a while. Hot. Payin' to park sucks.
DesertMud - Hiking, Mountain Biking, Pine Trees, Southern California
Silverwood Lake Bike Path Update
2/21/97 23.2 140 San Bernardino NF (CA). OUT AND BACK. Bottom of dirt Hwy 173 to Willow Creek Road outside Cedar Glen near Lake Arrowhead. I stopped at Willow Creek Rd because there's more traffic after North Bay Rd meets 173. I don't remember much about this ride except I didn't have much studying to do that weekend and I was well armed.
DesertMud - Hiking, Mountain Biking, Pine Trees, Southern California
Lake Arrowhead from Hesperia Update
1/19/97 12.8 ? San Bernardino NF (CA). OUT AND BACK. Bottom of dirt Hwy 173 to near the top of dirt Hwy 173. At 6.4 miles the snow was about 16in deep and not rideable; I messed around in the snow for awhile and turned around. I ate a lot of mud on the way down, ruined my chain on this ride. Awesome snow though.

Highway 173 Update
12/07/96 30.0 137 Hesperia (CA). A random ride around my house. First time I rode 30 miles in a day.
10/12/96 25.0 97 Hesperia (CA). A random ride around my house. First time I rode 25 miles in a day.
